Activity 7 - Chapter 7
Re-read Chapter 7: The Shore at Last
An ‘adverb of manner’ is a word that describes how an action is performed.
These adverbs usually end in -ly.
Pick out the adverbs of manner in the extract below from Chapter 7.
‘Beyond the field was a thick forest, full of towering trees. My uncle stepped briskly into the cool shadows. Reluctantly, I followed him. All sorts of strange creatures must have once lived down here. Could they still live here?’
Now, transform these sentences, so you include an adverb of manner (an example has been done for you):
Example
Professor Liedenbrock is an enthusiastic explorer.
- He explores enthusiastically.
Hans is a creative thinker.
- He thinks ______________________ .
Professor Liedenbrock is a determined explorer.
- He explores _____________________ .
Axel is a reluctant participant.
- He ________________ ___________________ .
Now write a sentence of your own about one of the characters, using an adverb of manner.
Activity 8
There are 3 adverbs of manner that do not follow the -ly spelling rule. See if you can figure out what they are:
I am a good dancer.
- I dance ___ ___ ___ ___ .
I am a hard worker.
- I work ___ ___ ___ ___ .
I am a fast driver.
- I drive ___ ___ ___ ___ .
Activity 9
There are some mistakes in this piece of writing.

Hans works hardly to make sure that they survive all the dangerous situations they find themselves in but Professor Lindenbrock does not seem to appreciate this. Alex is scared of his Uncle because he behaves crazy.
